FLASHBACK FILMING

FRIDAY 12TH DECEMBER - ARMY/ FLASHBACK SCENES

With a 9 o'clock start for Eddie and I, we were with our crew by 10 and driving up to the woods in order to film our army /flashback scenes. The idea of these scenes are an explanatory narrative in order to show the progression of our protagonist's post traumatic stress disorder. It features 'Ollie' our protagonist (first on left) and his army colleagues, following their friendship before they get an unexpected attack from the enemy which ends up having all his friends killed including his best friend 'Dan'; second from left. This sparks an anger which leads him to proceed in killing the enemy. Guilt ridden, he blames the death of 'Dan' on himself, because he got there too late to save him.

THE HEAD CAM

Not only have we been using the Canon 600D but we also used a head cam for point of view shots, to create that shaky/ handheld look and to connote the fear in our protagonists eyes to our audience clearly. This worked extremely well and the difference in shot will be a great comparison with our others, as it is slightly more blurred which portrays his emotions as he fears for his life - things are not so clear to him in moments of panic. This will be edited in as a point of view shot to enhance the narrative of our music video.

ARMY FLASHBACK FILMING DAY

FRIDAY 19TH DECEMBER - ARMY FLASHBACK SCENES

To our music video, the army flashback scenes are of vital importance to our narrrative. These form the reason to our protagonists Post Traumatic Distress Disorder.

A group of young soldiers are sent out to defend an isolated part of the woods; a part of the woods that had not been touched by enemy hands in a very long time, so the soldiers are thought to be relatively safe out there. However this team faces an enemy attack, where our protagonist's best friend gets stabbed trying to defend himself. His friend dies in his arms and this is what leads to his distress and paranoia of the forest and the war.

SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

On one evening this week, I attended a short film festival at the Exeter Phoenix centre, which was a two night experience showing national and international award winning short films that we would nominate to be the overall winner of an international film competition.

Although I chose to do a music video, rather than a short film, seeing incredible pieces of art through film, made for an inspirational and influential evening. Being able to view young and new film makers showing off their work using low budget equipment was fantastic to see and gave Eddie and I a lot of excitement towards creating our own video.

These videos also influenced our own piece giving us ideas of shots and camera angles to use, especially as one particular video was set in a war featuring young people, which was very topical for us - this film especially inspired our video.

EVENU INSPIRATION

EVENU INSPIRATION

EVENU - "OWN WAY HOME"

In terms of a rock/ alternative band, I thought it would be good to look at some upcoming band videos, to be inspired by professional videos made with a lot less money than most music videos. This band, 'Evenu'  I discovered through the drummer who i met a couple of years ago and have ever since fallen in love with their music, so 'Evenu' have been a massive inspiration in the conventions of my own music video.
They have used a band with four members, including 2 on guitar, 1 bassist and 1 drummer.

The major reason that I found their music video to be such an inspiration was mainly because of the camera shots and angles that were used.

I wanted to get influences from a pre-existing band of a similar genre so  I could match the codes and conventions of the shots they used.

Evenu as a band uses a variety of different shots in their video and it gave me the inspiration we needed to use different shots to great success.

As you can see from the screenshots I have captured from their music video of "Own way home", they have used close ups of each of the different band members to signify that this isn't a solo artist and that every member is as important as each other. The band is a team effort and this is something I wanted to portray within my own 'Greenday' video.

The only person who gets extra close-ups and shots of them-self is the main singer, as this is a convention of band shots, in which the main singer always gains the star image and becomes the icon of the band.

Evenu has been a massive inspiration throughout my work and final music video as its useful to be influenced by real media texts in order to follow and adhere to the stereotypers and code and conventions of the genre, which I feel my video has done very successfully - creating a balanced piece between a strong narrative and impactful band shots.

BAND ON LOCATION

Our original vision of the band scenes were set in a derelict barn, to create a grungy, old, run down mise en scene for our punk/ rock alternative genre of music. If we were doing a pop music video we'd have wanted the setting to be pristine white or black so the focus is completely on the artist to fit with that particular genre. Yet the punk/rock alternative genre relies on a dark/ mysterious setting creating the perfect atmosphere for our band.

So we set out to find a place we could film in, that was both safe and big enough to set up lighting and band equipment. After finding the location, we went to check it out in terms of safety and doing a risk assessment. Finally a few days before our planned shoot, we agreed that it would not be suitable, due to broken glass on the floor and the actual structure of the building was not deemed to be safe.

Luckily, I knew someone that owned a barn with electricity that could be a possible location for our shoot, so after phoning him up to ask permission and a little visit from Eddie to check out the setting, we agreed that this would be the ideal place to film our music video.

We spent the Sunday morning clearing out the corner of the barn, using fork lifts and brooms to sweep the dust away.  We loved the background of the old, dusty walls and uneven surfaces which helped create the mise en scene that we set out to find.

As you can see there is also a large circular hole in the side of the wall, which was originally covered up by a wooden board, but after some discussion with the owner, Eddie and I agreed to have it taken down as we feared it would ruin our mise en scene. This actually turned out really well with our shots and helped out later on in the night with our shot symmetry and rule of thirds, by having a circular light on the opposite side of the screen.

As you can see by the shot on the right, the two circles create wonderful symmetry that made me very happy when taking the shots!

What we did next was to set up our filming equipment, which included; lighting, cameras, dollys etc.

We moved the lights and cameras constantly throughout filming to create the ideal lighting atmosphere for each shot.

Then the band equipment had to be set up, which included; a drum-kit, microphone and stand, amps and decking for the equipment to be situated apon.

Behind us we also had a car which we played the 'Wake me up when September ends' song through, so that our actors could play and sing along to it, in order to get the right timing of the song.

The car had to be moved later on in the night, so we could do a 360 degree shot of the setting and we needed for the actors to be looking into darkness.

Once the the day turned to night, we could finally see how effective our lights would be in the setting - and after a workshop at school on lighting band equipment, we chose to use two LED lights on the red colour setting to light up the drum-kit. The colour red was inspired to us both by the genre of our music and by our colour motif in representing blood throughout our music video.

The first shots we were filming, we meant to be on a basic background just lighting up (Ollie's) our protagonists face in a warm glow light. We originally found an empty container to film the shots in, but decided the lighting wasn't good enough for the shots we wanted, so instead used one of the back walls of our barn to create the ideal, rustic looking background.

This was then well lit by having to lights on either side pointed at each other on a dull beam, and a footlight pointing up at the face and guitar.
I particularly like the fact that one side of the wall is paler than the other, as I feel it creates a good contrast and theme of light and dark, good and bad.

The pictures below shows our protagonist (Oliver Trivett) lit up by the three lights we used for our first shots and Angus Hilton who assisted with our transport and general assisting demonstrating the light effect on his face, during light and with a slightly colder lighting.

DESIGN TO REALITY

A while back Eddie and I sat down to design costumes for our band in the band shots of our music video. The two tops drawn at the bottom were for Lily Pearson our female drummer and as a female punk/ rock artist we decided her top should be both ripped and black to symbolize and express our chosen genre. We decided on the bottom right version as it was a more modern adaptation and as shown in the pictures below - these are the stages I took to create this designed top.

The first step I took was to make the top shorter as stereotypically punk/ rock female artists show a fair amount of skin, so I wanted to create a semi-crop top.

Next I had to lower the neckline, to once again show a little bit more flesh and to give a wide neckline, but also to make the edges a bit ragged and torn, keeping with the house style and genre.

Then I gave the top a 3/4 length sleeve as I wanted her wrists to be shown because of her being the drummer and finally I cut two holes down each sleeve and two further holes over the shoulders to finally get the design we had planned.

CASTING THE BAND

OUR BAND:

We have chosen a three member band which is typical of a punk/ rock band, including a main singer/ guitarist, bassist and drummer.

OLLIE - Lead singer, acoustic and electric guitarist.
We felt he gave the punk/rock vibe we needed in a band singer.
Favourite Music: Alexisonfire, City and Colour, Bastille, Metallica etc.
Instrument: Voice and Guitar (acoustic and electric)

LEWIS - Bassist.
Very talented guitarist who could capture our punk/rock image.
Favourite Music: Greenday, Bowling for soup, Patnt Pending, Biffy Clyro,
Foo-fighters, etc.
Instrument: Bass

LILY - Drummer.
We wanted to subvert the genre by having a female drummer, which is very rare in punk/rock bands.
Favourite Music: Bastille, Alt-J, Imagine Dragons, Kodaline.
Instrument: Drums
